第1戦セント・ピーターズバーグ・スペシャル・フォト・ギャラリー／2016 St. Petersburg Special Photo Gallery

2016年のインディカー・シリーズは、3月11日に開幕しました。東日本大震災からちょうど5年、フロリダ州セント・ピーターズバーグにいた日本人は、様々な思いを胸にこの日を迎えていたと思います。

実家の800メートル先まで津波が来たこともあり、僕自身にとってもこの日はやはり特別でした。5年も経てば、かなり復興するに違いないという期待とともに故郷を見守ってきましたが、未だ実家の近所には仮設住宅が並び、避難者の総数は17万人以上もいるという現実にただただ愕然とするしかありません。http://vdata.nikkei.com/prj2/shinsai2016-photo/

本来、2年間だけ住むことを想定して作られた仮設の住宅に、あと何年住まなければならないのか。放射性物質の除染が終わって、自宅に戻れる日が来るのか。離ればなれになった家族と再び一緒に過ごせる日が来るのか……。被災された方々のことを思うと、ほんとうに胸が締め付けられます。

このような日本にとって節目の日をセント・ピーターズバーグで迎え、レースでは佐藤琢磨選手がアクシデントで21番手まで転落したにもかかわらず、多重クラッシュも奇跡的に回避して6位フィニッシュを成し遂げてくれました。この大躍進に胸を躍らせた被災地のファンのみなさんも、きっと多かったことでしょう。

The opening race of the 2016 IndyCar Series was held on March 11, 2016. This day was particularly special because it was also the fifth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. There were mixed emotions among the Japanese people who were on site at the race in St. Petersburg, Florida.
　
For me personally, the tsunami that struck Japan five years ago came within 800 meters of my family home. Over the past five years I have kept hope that I would see significant recovery in the areas surrounding my family home, but the shocking reality is that there are still more than 170,000 people in the region without permanent homes, living in temporary housing.

The temporary housing was put in place with the idea that victims of the disaster would live there for up to two years and then move back to their original homes or find permanent living elsewhere. I just wonder how much longer these people have to stay there. Will their homes ever be completely removed of radiation so that they can return? Will they ever be reunited with other family members that they were separated from? My heart truly aches for the victims of this disaster.
　
We remembered this special day from St. Petersburg, where Japanese driver Takuma Sato fell back to 21st place after a collision, but amazingly made his way back through the field to finish in sixth place. I'm sure this result brought much excitement to many of his fans in the regions affected by the earthquake disaster.
　
Below are my best shots of the St. Petersburg race. As I took these photos, I kept thoughts of my hometown close, as well as gratitude for the opportunity to be at the race in person.
